Overview

Family Assistant | Cook
Full-Time | Marin, CA

The Role

A warm, busy family of five in Marin is looking for a Family Assistant | Cook who is genuinely a Jack or Jill of all trades, someone who feels confident wearing many hats and moving fluidly between them throughout the day. This role blends household organization, preparing family meals, coordinating and overseeing vendors, errands, pet care, and some kid-related driving. The ideal candidate is proactive, resourceful, and comfortable being handed a loose plan for the week and figuring out how to make it run smoothly.  Strong communication skills are required.

The family includes two working parents, three kids, and two much-loved dogs. There's also a second home in Tahoe, and periodic travel support may be part of the role as the family's needs come up throughout the year.

Schedule

Full-time, generally 10am–7pm three days a week and 12pm–7pm two days a week, with some flexibility expected on both sides.

Responsibilities

Household & Family Coordination

  • Proactively manage the family's master schedule and calendar, and track active family to-do lists
  • Schedule school appointments, medical, dental, and personal wellness appointments
  • Coordinate schedules and registrations for tutoring, camps, sports, athletic trainers, and other activities
  • Coordinate with household vendors and service providers, acting as the point of contact for home maintenance needs (gardeners, contractors, repairmen)
  • Schedule and monitor recurring specialty services as needed (pool cleanings, rug cleanings, HVAC/dryer vent cleaning, and similar)
  • Run errands and manage day-to-day household needs, including checking the PO box and handling returns
  • Source school clothes, sports equipment, and personal items as needed
  • Manage household and recurring subscription orders, coordinating with the housekeeper on supply needs
  • Tidy and maintain organization throughout the home, including light housekeeping and laundry (note: this is not a housekeeping role)
  • Support light travel booking and research, using good judgment to move things forward independently and troubleshooting trip demands
  • Assist with special family projects, holiday gift buying, and event planning

Meal Preparation & Groceries

  • Prepare family-friendly meals that are gluten-free across the board, with additional consideration for other dietary restrictions
  • Take time on Fridays to plan and prep for the week ahead, thinking through the family's schedule and timing meals so they hold up well even if dinner is delayed
  • Manage grocery orders and deliveries (Good Eggs, Whole Foods, specialty meat boxes) to minimize in-person store runs
  • Maintain healthy pantry and fresh snack supply to provide healthy options for active lifestyle
  • Offer suggestions and options rather than over-planning; the family enjoys trying new things and giving feedback

Driving & Kid Support

  • Provide driving support a few days a week, including school pickups and shuttling to after-school activities
  • Manage vehicle logistics as needed, including managing car services, oil changes, and repair appointments
  • Stay flexible day to day, checking in on what support is needed rather than following a fixed script

Pet Care

  • Be genuinely comfortable and warm with two friendly dogs
  • Coordinate daily walking schedules with the dog walker and schedule boarding for family trips
  • Schedule grooming visits; manage dog food and supply orders
  • Administer routine pet medications as needed
  • Schedule and take dogs to vet appointments

Travel Support (as needed, a plus but not required)

  • Openness to occasional travel to Tahoe or Colorado to help set up a home ahead of or alongside the family, which may include coordinating vendors, stocking food, arranging a deep clean, or handling errands

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5+ years of experience working as a Family Assistant in a private household
  • A natural coordinator and troubleshooter, someone who catches issues before they become problems and solves them independently
  • Comfortable making day-to-day decisions without needing every detail confirmed first
  • Organized, thoughtful, and detail-oriented, without over-engineering simple tasks
  • A casual, warm, go-with-the-flow personality that fits a busy, sometimes chaotic household
  • Enjoy cooking; confident in the kitchen with dietary restrictions, without needing meals to be complicated
  • Dog-loving and comfortable with full-size, high-energy dogs
  • Willing to travel ahead of the family if requested
  • Legally authorized to work in the US
  • Within a commutable distance to Marin
  • Clean driving record and valid driver's license
  • Willing to undergo an in-depth background check and provide excellent employment references

Compensation and Benefits

  • $55+ per hour | DOE
  • Benefits including:
    • $500 per month healthcare stipend
    • 10 days of paid vacation
      • 5 days taken during the Christmas/winter holidays
    • 11 paid holidays
    • 5 paid sick days
    • Discretionary bonus
    • Access to a retirement plan – CalSavers
